About Jay

Jay's Biography

Joseph H. “Jay” Langhammer has lived in Texas since 1958 and attended Paschal High School in Fort Worth. A 1966 graduate of Texas Christian University with a degree in Radio-Television-Film, he first gained writing experience as an undergraduate member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, having several sports features published in the Delt national magazine, The Rainbow, before graduation. He also was assistant sports editor for The Skiff, TCU’s school newspaper, and served as sports editor of the 1966 TCU Horned Frog yearbook. While serving as an officer in the Air Force, he became sports editor of The Rainbow in 1967 and still holds that job today.

Following nearly four years of Air Force duty; a year visiting college campuses for his Fraternity; and a semester in graduate school at TCU, Jay spent six years with radio and TV stations in the Dallas-Fort Worth market. During this time, he hosted a daily five minute drive time sports show for a country music station; served as a public address announcer for the Fort Worth Braves minor league football team; and moved into broadcast sales.

Jay’s interest in music began in high school and, while in college, he sang with TCU rock band, The Gnats, during 1965 and early 1966 before going into the Air Force. The group appeared on stage at concerts by The Byrds, The Yardbirds and Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels. A song by The Gnats is part of the three disc “Fort Worth Teen Scene” 2004 CD collection from Norton Records and an interview on www.60sgaragebands.com is part of this website.

In addition to his freelance writing activities, Jay held an exhibit sales position with The Freeman Companies of Dallas from August 1, 1977 until retiring on May 3, 2005. During his last five years with Freeman, he sang and played guitar in a company rock band, The Exhibitionists. He is now devoting full time to research and writing projects.
